Classes Include

Industry Introduction

  • Introduction to the various roles in the fashion industry.

  • Understand how all roles work together to bring products to market.

Building A Technical Specification Package

  • Introduction to building a spec sheet.

  • Use of software to produce industry-standard technical documents.

  • Understand how to prepare technical specification packages.

Construction

Overview / review of different seam constructions.

  • Identify construction details in a spec sheet.

  • Overview of trim items often found in apparel products.

  • BOMs (bills of materials) are defined.

  • Build a BOM, estimating yields, minimum orders, etc.

  • Understand and prepare a production plan/calendar.

  • Identify fabric and trim lead times with suppliers.

  • Understand lab dips, color matching, and DTM (Dye to Match) trims

Sourcing

  • Understand the role of sourcing and determine the best methods of use.

  • Learn about the pros and cons of factory allocation.

  • Learn how to confirm material sourcing.

  • Understand the flowchart that runs between PD, Sourcing Managers, and Design

  • Using learned techniques, locate one overseas apparel manufacturer to produce a total of two samples, using tech packs created.

Production & Planning

  • Understand basic factory flow.

  • Understand and prepare costing, estimating yields.

  • Produce a production plan using strict timelines.

  • Understand the role of finance.

Textile Science

Textile fibers, yarn classification and numbering, texturing, spun yarn manufacturing, and testing.

  • Knitting and weaving fundamentals and nonwovens.

  • Fabric preparation and fabric finishing.

  • Color – dyestuffs, pigments, digital and traditional printing methods.

  • Get to know where to source fabric.

Prototype Buiding

Learn how to problem solving in manufacturing.

  • Be able to identify effective methods for tracking changes.

  • Producing a run – either sample or production, and what are the differences.

  • QC – working with production to identify and uphold quality standards.

  • Confirm and release approved tech packs.

  • Using tech packs, produce three samples at domestic factory

Presentation

  • Final project: Total of 4 manufactured garments, 2 garments domestically made and 2 garments internationally made.

  • Students will present their final presentation to their peers and the course instructor.

This integrated hands-on course will introduce you to the business of product development and apparel manufacturing. Top industry professionals will teach you how to bring your product from concept to completion.

You will learn the start-up of product development, including understanding textile science, how to build prototypes, and how to identify basic garment construction techniques. You will prepare industry-standard technical specification packages and learn how to source material and labor, local and abroad.

Costing structures and production planning are emphasized. In a global economy, production of a product line must be executed with business profit in mind. Learn the skills to navigate the complex business of product development and production to further develop your business reach or improve your existing small business profile.

Meet your professors

Julie Berg

Julie Berg brings 25 years of forward-thinking fashion design and energy-fuelled marketing talent to the table. A product development specialist for both retail and private labels, she’s crafted contemporary designer sportswear and accessories collections for small-sized independent retailers and big brands alike. Working since the early ’90s with Vancouver’s Neto Leather label, she’s been a creative resource for Canadian retailers Harry Rosen, Bod & Christensen, and Leone, and for US majors such as Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Boston Proper. Travelling across North America and Europe to industry trade shows, Julie has worked with fashion buyers and agencies to assist in marketing positioning and distribution, and with textile mills and tanneries for product development. As a business entrepreneur, she launched her own eco-sportswear label, Know Wear, whose tourism-targeted client list boasted Princess Cruise Lines, BC Ferries and Royal BC Museum, and reached targeted sales projections of $1M in the third year of operation. For the last six years, Julie has served as a full-time professor at prestigious Vancouver art colleges, instructing in both the design and marketing disciplines, ensuring excellent outcomes for the next generation of industry innovators.

Carla Jones

Carla is a passionate multi-disciplinary creative with a sharp eye for the details that make great product design. They are a graduate of LaSalle College’s fashion design program, with a focus on technical development and design. Carla has since worked at Lululemon on their Product Innovation team, where they supported the development of a female-focused apparel line for ultra-marathon runners among other exciting projects. Carla now focuses on teaching, building their personal brand, and pursuing creative projects with private clients.
